live. laugh. love. = what God wants for us

live, laugh, love is a pretty common catch phrase of today. Those kinds of things usually really bug me, but once i thought about it, it actually has some depth to it.

This poem sums up the idea of those three things are what you need in life. I fill in the blank of love to mean loving God, but most people probably don’t. The “live” means to live your life to the fullest. Of course this doesn’t mean going crazy partying it up or whatever, but instead enjoying the things in life that God has blessed you with. “Laugh” meaning… well laugh. Its good for you in every way. God has given Christians the ability to be completely happy and content in Him, and He commands us to be joyful always. So why not live, laugh, love?

When You Were Young…

By The Killers

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now … here he comes!

He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when you were young

Can we climb this mountain
I don’t know
Higher now than ever before
I know we can make it if we take it slow
Let’s take it easy
Easy now, watch it go

We’re burning down the highway skyline
On the back of a hurricane that started turning
When you were young
When you were young

And sometimes you close your eyes
and see the place where you used to live
When you were young

They say the devil’s water, it ain’t so sweet
You don’t have to drink right now
But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while

You sit there in your heartache
Waiting on some beautiful boy to
To save you from your old ways
You play forgiveness
Watch it now here he comes

He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
But he talks like a gentleman
Like you imagined when you were young
(He talks like a gentlemen, like you imagined when)
When you were young

I said he doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
He doesn’t look a thing like Jesus
But more than you’ll ever know

The Killers’ lyrics are the most quirky and some, I believe, are the most difficult to interpret. If you have ever listened to “Somebody Told Me” or “Human”, you’d know exactly what I am talking about. However, this song is not as difficult. You’ve probably heard this song on the radio a year back as it is extremely catchy. The chorus is easy to remember. And no doubt you will have it stuck in your head if you listen to it once more. (Currently, I am listening to it, and it will be stuck in my head.) When I first heard this song, I didn’t think it was The Killers. The sound was very unlike their first album and the lyrics had a religious tone to them (indicated by Jesus and the Devil’s water).

But I doubt you’ve come to read my ramblings about whether or not the song is catchy or not. But what the song is about, and my opinion on it.

Well, it seems to me that it is written to a woman/girl/female who is awaiting her prince, the “beautiful boy” to come “save you from your old ways.” However, when he comes, he’s not the perfect man she imagined but he does “talk like a gentlemen.” The man has some qualities that she had dreamed of when she was young and it seems that she has been somewhat let down by the lack of the perfect man. However, it seems that the singer writes some hope to the girl in the words “but more than you’ll ever know”, that there is more to this guy than meets the eye.

This song is one that I have always played on my iPod and you can’t deny that there is charm to the song. The lyrics aren’t very deep, but they aren’t shallow either. The chorus is simplistic, and when the song starts playing, it draws you in. I love it. The lyrics also bring hope to those guys that don’t appear to be the perfect man or the “Jesus” of the girl’s childhood dreams, but if given time, that guy may be the so called “the one”…just not in the way you’d think.

Of course, I could be totally off.

God’s View of Marriage

God intended marriage to bond a man and a woman together, as one flesh, for the rest of their lives. He did this so that the love that occurs in a marriage could maybe give the tiniest glimpse of what our love for God should be like. This type of commitment is almost non-existent in today’s society. Marriage is seen as the next step from boyfriend and girlfriend, and if it doesn’t work, then there’s always divorce. Divorce is taken so lightly, it is considered normal for couples to separate. Marriage is so far distorted from what God meant for it to be.

“Marriage is a great institution, but I’m not ready for an institution”, as Mae West put it. Why is marriage seen as a morbid thing that only traps you? God said in Proverbs 5:15-19 that when a man finds his wife, she should be seen as a treasure. Marriage is not merely a cultural tradition that must be done at some point in a person’s life, but a blessing from God. 1 Corinthians 7:12-16 speaks of the way husbands and wives should treat one another. Women should submit to their husbands out of reverance and respect for them. Husbands should love their wives as Christ loves the church, and God was Jesus’ greatest love! The love that you have for your spouse should be second only to your love for God.
